Abstract
The main aim of this master thesis is to conceptually and structurally design a multi-storey building by combining two different timber building systems and then, in detail, anlalyse the interface between the two systems. The first two storeys will be built in a new post and beam system with the Swedish name Trä8, developed by a Scandinavian manufacturer of glued laminated timber. The remaining three storeys will be built from volumetric timber modules(a prefabricated light frame timber system). This will allow the creation of mixed-purpose buildings with large spans in the lower sections, for e.g. commercial use, and dwellings in the top part. The method used consist of hand calculations in order to learn how to design timber structures in a traditional/conservative way. To analyse the interface between the Trä8 and the volumetric system, the hand calculations are combined with computer calculations using a Finite Element software. The desing will be based on Eurocode 5 and a literature review of tiber building systems and timber design will provide the basic knowledge required to perform the calculations.
