Abstract

Quantum materials is a broad term used in condensed matter physics to define materials whose collective properties are governed by quantum behavior, which are challenging to understand. These materials are sensitive to small changes in the environment, such as changes in temperature, doping or strain. This can lead to nanoscale phase separation, in which a single sample can coexist different states at different regions of space. In this thesis, a method for imaging this phase separation based on coherent diffractive imaging is developed and is applied to the quantum material VO2.
