En l'era digital actual, l'accés a Internet s'ha convertit en una necessitat essencial, impulsant el desenvolupament social, econòmic i cultural de les societats modernes. La infraestructura de xarxa és clau per garantir una connectivitat constant i eficient, i la seva monitorització és fonamental per assegurar la disponibilitat i seguretat dels serveis digitals. Aquest projecte, desenvolupat com a part del Grau d'Enginyeria Informàtica a la Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC), té com a objectiu millorar el sistema de monitorització de la infraestructura de xarxa de la UPC, gestionada per UPCnet. El projecte sorgeix de la necessitat de substituir l'actual sistema de monitorització monolític basat en Observium, que no pot gestionar eficientment el volum de dades generat pels equips de xarxa. Es proposa una solució distribuïda per repartir la càrrega de treball entre diverses màquines, millorant així la velocitat, flexibilitat, escalabilitat i tolerància a fallades del sistema. L'objectiu principal és desplegar una plataforma distribuïda, és a dir, que diverses màquines virtuals col·laborin per a realitzar conjuntament les tasques de monitorització. La plataforma, basada en Observium, haurà de ser capaç de monitoritzar la xarxa de la UPC de manera eficient. Addicionalment, es preveu actualitzar el protocol SNMP a la versió 3 per augmentar la seguretat, utilitzar Ansible per automatitzar tasques repetitives de configuració d'equips de xarxa, i implementar una solució escalable que permeti una futura ampliació del sistema.

In the current digital era, access to the Internet has become an essential necessity, driving the social, economic, and cultural development of modern societies. Network infrastructure is key to ensuring constant and efficient connectivity, and its monitoring is fundamental to ensuring the availability and security of digital services. This project, developed as part of the Computer Engineering Degree at the Polytechnic University of Catalonia (UPC), aims to improve the monitoring system of the UPC's network infrastructure, managed by UPCnet. The project arises from the need to replace the current monolithic monitoring system based on Observium, which cannot efficiently manage the volume of data generated by network devices. A distributed solution is proposed to distribute the workload among several machines, thus improving the system's speed, flexibility, scalability, and fault tolerance. The main objective is to deploy a distributed platform where multiple virtual machines collaborate to perform monitoring tasks together. The platform, based on Observium, will efficiently monitor the UPC network. Additionally, it is planned to upgrade the SNMP protocol to version 3 to increase security, use Ansible to automate repetitive network equipment configuration tasks, and implement a scalable solution that allows for future system expansion.

Aquest treball proposa la creació d'una plataforma automatitzada per a pentesting amb l'objectiu de simplificar i millorar els processos de ciberseguretat per a empreses de qualsevol mida, especialment pimes sense la capacitat de contactar a un equip especialitzat. Tot i que existeixen eines semiautomàtiques com Burpsuite, Metasploit o Nessus aquestes són sovint especialitzades en aspectes concrets o costoses, dificultant el seu ús per a petites i mitjanes empreses, que constitueixen el 99,8% del teixit empresarial català. L'objectiu principal és crear una plataforma unificada que integri les principals eines de pentesting, automatitzant les tasques per facilitar-ne l'ús i la interpretació dels resultats per part dels usuaris. Aquesta plataforma ha de ser accessible, fàcil d'utilitzar per a tècnics no tan especialitzats en el sector i econòmica per a les pimes. En definitiva, tot i que el resultat final no aporta funcionalitats o eines noves al camp de la ciberseguretat, la creació d'una plataforma automatitzada i unificada facilita enormement el procés de pentesting, fent-lo més accessible i eficient. Això representa una millora significativa en la seguretat digital per a moltes empreses, que sovint no poden permetre's les eines actuals disponibles al mercat.

This paper proposes the creation of an automated platform for pentesting with the aim of simplifying and improving cybersecurity processes for companies of any size, especially SMEs without the ability to contact a specialized team. Although there are semi-automatic tools such as Burpsuite, Metasploit or Nessus, these are often specialized in specific aspects or have hight costs, making their use difficult for small and medium-sized companies, which make up 99.8% of the Catalan business fabric. The main goal is to create a unified platform that integrates the main pentesting tools, automating tasks to make it easier for users to use and interpret the results. This platform must be accessible, easy to use for non-specialized technicians in the sector and economical for SMEs. Ultimately, while the end result does not bring any new functionalities or tools to the cybersecurity field, creating an automated and unified platform greatly facilitates the pentesting process, making it more accessible and efficient. This represents a significant improvement in digital security for many businesses, which often cannot afford the current tools available on the market.

Este proyecto se ha llevado a cabo durante una estancia de prácticas en HP, Hewlett Packard. El problema inicial planteado fue el tiempo excesivo que tomaba adaptar scripts cruciales al desarrollo de nuevas impresoras, dado que cada una posee una estructura única. Esto resultaba en horas de desarrollo dedicadas a modificar el código fuente de estos scripts o a crear nuevas versiones para su uso. Para solucionar este problema, se propuso implementar un método que permitiera al programa detectar el tipo de impresora y adaptarse dinámicamente a sus condiciones. Se eligió Python como lenguaje de programación, ya que las impresoras de HP utilizan este lenguaje. La solución se centró en la reimplementación de los scripts, permitiéndoles recibir información de los archivos sobre la estructura de las impresoras. Además, se desarrollaron librerías que facilitarían esta tarea, y al distribuirlo en librerías, se garantizaría que los futuros scripts pudieran ser programados con la capacidad adaptativa desde el inicio. Los resultados obtenidos fueron satisfactorios, demostrando que el tiempo necesario para realizar una adaptación se ha reducido a no más de diez minutos.

This project was carried out during an internship at HP, Hewlett Packard. The initial problem posed was the excessive time it took to adapt crucial scripts for the development of new printers, given that each has a unique structure. This resulted in hours of programming dedicated to modifying the source code of these scripts or creating new versions for their use. To solve this problem, I proposed to implement a method that would allow the program to detect the type of printer and dynamically adapt to its conditions. Python was chosen as the programming language since HP printers use this language. The solution focused on reimplementing the scripts, allowing them to receive information from files about the structure of the printers. Additionally, libraries were developed to facilitate this task, and by distributing it in libraries, it would be ensured that future scripts could be programmed with adaptive capability from the start. The results obtained were satisfactory, demonstrating that the time needed for an adaptation has been reduced to no more than ten minutes.

En la empresa en la que trabajo, Albedo Telecom, se desarrolló un dispositivo llamado Net.Time. La función de este dispositivo es la de trabajar como master en una red que trabaje con el protocolo PTP. El protocolo PTP (Precise Time Protocolo) es un protocolo de sincronización de dispositivos que usa la jerarquía de master-slave. El master recibe su tiempo de referencia desde una fuente de tiempo de alta precisión. Los slaves se comunican con el master mediante intercambio de paquetes para ir sincronizando sus relojes internos con el del master. Cuando Net.Time fue lanzado al mercado, se ofrecía una capacidad de servicio para 256 slaves, pero este valor nunca fue comprobado empíricamente. En este proyecto se desarrollará una herramienta que simula el comportamiento del protocolo PTP. El objetivo principal es simular una serie de slaves para que ataquen a un Net.Time con la intención de ver a cuantos slaves puede dar servicio este dispositivo. La herramienta desarrollada no ha sido del todo terminada, la parte unicast no se ha terminado. Pero se han podido realizar tests usando el modo de direccionamiento multicast. Estos tests han probado diferentes conjuntos de slaves, se han hecho pruebas con 256 slaves, con 512 slaves y con 1024 slaves. Los resultados obtenidos han sido satisfactorios, se ha comprobado que, en modo multicast, Net.Time es capaz de dar servicio a 1024 slaves, más de lo que se prometía a los clientes. No se ha encontrado el límite de servicio del master ya que para más cantidad de slaves los tests tardaban mucho en procesarse y no ha dado tiempo de realizarlos.

In the company where I work, Albedo Telecom, a device called Net.Time was developed. The function of this device is to work as a master in a network that works with the PTP protocol. The Precise Time Protocol (PTP) is a device synchronization protocol that uses the master-slave hierarchy. The master receives its reference time from a high precision time source. The slaves communicate with the master by exchanging packets to synchronize their internal clocks with the master's. When Net.Time was released, a service capacity for 256 slaves was offered, but this value was never empirically proven. This project will develop a tool that simulates the behavior of the PTP protocol. The main objective is to simulate a series of slaves to attack a Net.Time with the intention of seeing how many slaves this device can serve. The tool developed has not been completely finished, the unicast part has not been finished. But tests could be performed using multicast addressing mode. These tests have tested different sets of slaves, tested 256 slaves, 512 slaves and 1024 slaves. The results have been satisfactory, it has been proven that, in multicast mode, Net.Time is able to serve 1024 slaves, more than what was promised to customers. The serve limit of the master has not been found since for more slaves the tests took a long time to process and it has not given time to perform them.

In recent months we have seen how Bluetooth Low Energy has become, due to the epidemiological situation, the most used technology for contact tracing. With this in mind, the objective of this project is to test and contrast the robustness and functionalities offered by Bluetooth Low Energy for contact tracing. And overall to see the accuracy and capabilities it can offer. To study digital contact tracing techniques using sensing devices we will integrate Internet of Things elements into the Digital Contact Tracing architecture. We will not only evaluate the proximity between two people for their contagion, but we will also add other factors, such as air quality through Internet of Things network nodes. Secondly, we are trying to determine as reliably and accurately as possible, within the limitations of Bluetooth, the accuracy between the transmitter and the receiver. For this we will first present a new architecture for digital contact tracing, and some of its adaptations. Along with the adaptation of an Internet of Things node to add the ability to communicate via Bluetooth Low Energy and the advantages to be gained in this case. Along with these modifications we will try to apply a solution that does not represent a large increase in the cost of implementation. We will then evaluate the accuracy and reliability of Bluetooth Low Energy for determining distances between a transmitter and receiver. In addition to determining the contact risk between two people for the possibility of contact, we also evaluate the quality of the signal between contacts in several scenarios. With this we can evaluate how accurate is the communication through our Internet of Things node and other Bluetooth Low Energy elements. We will then evaluate the mechanisms and the accuracy we can obtain for determining the contact risk in two ways. First, we will try to calculate the risk based on the relationship between the signal strength and the distance between the transmitter and the receiver. Secondly, we will try to classify contact risk based on distance ranges and apply a Machine Learning classifier to determine the approximate distance between the transmitter and the receiver. With all this added information we will be able to evaluate and determine conclusively if BLE is a potential technology for digital contact tracing protocols. And also if adding Internet of Things elements to the Digital Contact tracing architecture is an option to improve the determination of the contagion risk.

En aquest projecte es valora la viabilitat d'integrar LoRa en les comunicacions del node CAPTOR com a forma de reduir-ne el consum energètic. S'avaluen diferents possibles arquitectures, es dissenya el nou model, es desenvolupa un prototip, i s'analitza la viabilitat del model dissenyat a partir del prototip. LoRa és un protocol de comunicació inalàmbrica i una tecnologia de comunicació de llarg abast (Long Range) i de baix consum (Low Power), propietat de Semtech. El node CAPTOR és un dispositiu de monitoratge de la pol·lució de l'aire, mitjançant sensors low-cost d'ozó (O3), monòxid i diòxid de nitrogen (NO i NO2), material particulat (PM), temperatura i humitat relativa. El problema que resol el projecte té el seu origen en la necessitat de proveir de més autonomia al node CAPTOR: aquest funciona amb bateries, que amb el disseny anterior duren un mes i mig entre recàrregues. Es vol reduir el consum per augmentar la duració de les bateries. S'aconsegueix una reducció significativa del consum energètic desacoblant la Raspberry Pi del node, l'element del node que té un consum més elevat, i traspassant-la en el que passa a ser el gateway CAPTOR, el qual estarà endollat al corrent, no pas alimentat amb bateries. Aquesta redistribució estratègica dels elements porta a un nou paradigma que planteja diversos reptes que cal resoldre. El principal és la comunicació entre el node i el gateway, que es resol amb comunicacions utilitzant la tecnologia LoRa. Aquesta arquitectura node-gateway, a més, permet una topologia d'estrella entre un gateway i diferents nodes. Els resultats mostren la viabilitat d'aquesta integració, així com la millora no només energètica sinó també econòmica que aquest nou model CAPTOR comporta.

This project assesses the feasibility of integrating LoRa into the communications of the CAPTOR node as a way of reducing its energy consumption. Different architectures are evaluated, from there, a new model is designed, a prototype for this model is developed, and finally its feasibility is settled based on the prototype analysis. LoRa is a wireless communication protocol and also a Long Range and Low Power communication technology, property of Semtech. The CAPTOR node is an air pollution monitoring device, using low-cost sensors for ozone (O3), nitrogen monoxide and dioxide (NO and NO2), particulate material (PM), temperature, and relative moisture. The problem that solves this project arises from the need to provide more autonomy to the CAPTOR node: it is powered by batteries, which with the previous design last one and a half months between recharges. Consumption is to be reduced to increase battery life. A significant reduction in energy consumption is achieved by decoupling from the node the Raspberry Pi, the element of the node that has the highest consumption. The Raspberry Pi is transferred in what becomes the CAPTOR gateway, which will be plugged into the current, instead of being powered by batteries. This strategic redistribution of elements leads to a new paradigm that poses several challenges to be resolved. The main one is communication between the node and gateway, which is resolved with communications using LoRa technology. This node-gateway architecture also allows a star topology between a gateway and different nodes. The results show the viability of this new CAPTOR model, as well as the improvement, not only energetic but also economical.

La contaminación del aire es un problema medioambiental que preocupa a la mayoría de los ciudadanos. Es responsable de de 400.000 muertes prematuras cada año y causa un daño considerable a los recursos naturales y medio ambiente. Si no se controla la contaminación del aire, podemos esperar que nuestros cielos se vuelvan más contaminados y nuestro oxígeno más difícil de respirar. Los dispositivos existentes de monitoreo de la calidad del aire proporcionan información sobre los niveles de contaminantes en el aire, pero tienen un coste. Estos pueden costar cientos de miles de euros y son dispositivos muy voluminosos. En este TFG se propone la construcción de un dispositivo similar utilizando sensores de bajo coste y disponibles en el mercado que son de fácil acceso en los mercados junto con un microcontrolador adecuado y utilizar varios mecanismos para calibrar los datos recogidos. Los algoritmos de calibración tienen en cuenta varios factores que pueden influir en los niveles de contaminación, como la temperatura, Humedad relativa, etc. El dispositivo está dedicado a la medición de Ozono (O3), Nitrógeno Dióxido (NO2), Partículas (PM) y envian los datos a Amazon Web Services (AWS) en tiempo real, donde se calibran los datos a posteriori.

Air pollution is an environmental problem that concerns most citizens. It is responsible for 400,000 premature deaths each year and causes considerable damage to the natural environment. Should air pollution go unchecked, we can expect our skies to become foggier and our oxygen harder to breathe. Existing Air Quality monitoring devices provide information about the levels of pollutants in air, but they come at a price. These devices can cost hundreds of thousands of Euros and they are big bulky devices. We propose constructing a similar device using low-cost, off the shelf sensors that are readily available in markets along with a suitable microcontroller and use various algorithms to calibrate the data collected. The algorithm takes into consideration various other factors that may influence the pollution levels such as Temperature, Relative Humidity, etc. The device is dedicated to measuring Ozone (O3), Nitrogen Dioxide (NO2), Particulate Matter (PM), to calibrate these values and send the data onto Amazon Web Services (AWS) in real time.
