In recent years, there has been significant growth in the migrant population in Barcelona and Catalonia. Depending on their country of origin, immigrants face specific challenges from a healthcare perspective. The Catalan public healthcare system needs to understand what these challenges are and assess how to address them. To explore how this situation is being addressed in the city of Barcelona and Catalonia, a study was conducted in collaboration with the Drassanes-Vall d'Hebron International Health Unit. This unit, aware of the issues affecting immigrant communities, provides comprehensive and specialized care, conducts screenings, and carries out public health actions aimed at detecting and treating diseases such as Chagas disease and hepatitis C, especially among the Bolivian, Pakistani, and Chinese communities, which are at high risk for these pathologies. The study analyzes the disease prevalence data provided by the unit and compares it with official data from the countries of origin to evaluate whether the screenings conducted in Barcelona and Catalonia reached all migrant individuals, and whether the healthcare actions were truly effective. It was observed that some communities were more covered than others, but in general, there was an underdiagnosis of diseases in the three studied communities, suggesting that current campaigns are insufficient to identify all possible cases. Therefore, it was proposed to increase or adjust the campaigns to reach more people for diagnosis. Additionally, we did a statistical analysis of the individual data collected to determine whether socio-economic and cultural factors influenced the vulnerability of these communities to the diseases and their worsening. It was demonstrated that the vulnerability of these communities, combined with barriers such as the reason for immigration, lack of education, and limited access to healthcare services, negatively contributes to the incidence of these diseases. Finally, this work has been a good way to apply engineering and the knowledge acquired throughout the degree to the field of medicine. It demonstrates how technical knowledge can be used to improve understanding and solve specific problems in the healthcare field. Des de fa uns anys hi ha un creixement important de la població migrant a Barcelona i a Catalunya. En funció del país d'origen, els immigrants presenten reptes específics des de la perspectiva sanitària. Des de la sanitat pública catalana cal conèixer quins són aquests reptes i avaluar com afrontar-los. Per tal d'explorar com s'aborda aquesta situació a la ciutat de Barcelona i a Catalunya, es va dur a terme un estudi en col·laboració amb la Unitat de Salut Internacional Drassanes-Vall d'Hebron. Aquesta unitat, que n'és conscient de les problemàtiques que afecten a les comunitats immigrants, ofereix atenció integral i especialitzada, portant a terme cribratges i accions de salut pública destinades a detectar i tractar malalties com la malaltia de Chagas i l'hepatitis C, especialment entre les comunitats boliviana, pakistanesa i xinesa, que presenten un risc elevat per aquestes patologies. En el treball s'analitzen les dades de prevalença de les malalties proporcionades per la unitat i es contrasta amb dades oficials dels països d'origen per avaluar si els cribratges realitzats a Barcelona i a Catalunya arribaven a totes les persones immigrants, i si les accions d'atenció eren realment efectives. S'observa que n'hi ha comunitats més cobertes que d'altres, però en general hi ha un infradiagnòstic de les malalties a les tres comunitats estudiades, fet que suggereix que les campanyes actuals no són suficients per a identificar tots els casos possibles. Per tant, es proposa augmentar campanyes o ajustar-les de manera que arribin a diagnosticar més persones. A més, es fa una anàlisi estadística de les dades individuals recollides per determinar si existeixen factors socioeconòmics, culturals que influeixen en la vulnerabilitat d'aquestes comunitats davant les malalties i en el seu empitjorament. Es demostra que la situació de vulnerabilitat d'aquestes comunitats, sumada a barreres com el motiu d'immigració, la manca d'educació, i l'accés limitat a serveis sanitaris, contribueixen negativament a la incidència d'aquestes malalties. Finalment, aquest treball ha estat una bona manera d'aplicar l'enginyeria i els coneixements obtinguts al llarg de la carrera a la branca de la medicina. Demostrant com els coneixements tècnics poden ser utilitzats per millorar la comprensió i la resolució de problemes específics en el camp sanitari.

This Final Degree Project, titled MySugarBuddy: Smart Support for People with Diabetes, focuses on the development of an app designed for people with diabetes, aimed at facilitating blood glucose level monitoring, automatic logging of daily meals and daily analysis of these values. The goal of this application is to provide a tool that, in the future, could help individuals with diabetes manage their condition more efficiently, overcoming many of the barriers and complications they often face in their daily lives. To achieve this purpose, Python and Flutter technologies have been utilized to create an application based on a microservices architecture. This design enables the integration of multiple functionalities that contribute to easing the daily management of this chronic disease.

This work has been developed in collaboration with the BIOCOM-SC (Computational Biology and Complex Systems) research group at UPC. The flu is an infectious respiratory disease caused by influenza viruses, spreading seasonally mainly during the autumn and winter months in Europe. The primary objective of this study is to understand flu transmission patterns in different countries over the years. Additionally, it analyzes irregular behavior observed in some countries during the declining phase of flu cases. Mathematical epidemiology uses mathematical and computational models, which are powerful tools for understanding and predicting disease behavior. In this project, a compartmental SEIR (Susceptible, Exposed, Infectious, Recovered) model was optimized and adapted to achieve the project's goals. Epidemiological models optimized with common transmissibility parameters for each country have been properly adjusted to the observed data. These models have accurately reproduced flu transmission dynamics during the growth phase, demonstrating that transmission patterns can be consistent within a country over several seasons. The model was later modified to more accurately represent the flu's declining phase by introducing the injection of susceptibles. This approach incorporates new individuals susceptible to infection during this phase, better capturing the observed dynamics in various seasons with peaks or irregularities in case reduction. This empirical approach yielded excellent results across all adjusted seasons. The use of MATLAB's Genetic Algorithm to adjust the parameters of this injection of susceptibles proved much more effective than local optimization tools such as fminsearch or fmincon, as it can find the global minimum of the optimized function more easily and automatically. The models have been evaluated in their entirety, including both the growth and decline phases, with satisfactory results and 95% accuracy, indicating high reliability in representing flu transmission. As a future task, more countries will be included, and the models will be adjusted with common transmissibility parameters, along with a more mechanistic explanation based on the empirical approach of susceptible injections.

Aquest treball ha estat desenvolupat juntament amb el grup de recerca BIOCOM-SC (Biologia Computacional i Sistemes Complexos) de la UPC. La grip és una malaltia respiratòria infecciosa causada pels virus de la influença, que es propaga estacionalment, principalment durant els mesos de tardor i hivern a Europa. L'objectiu principal d'aquest estudi és entendre els patrons de transmissivitat de la grip en diferents països al llarg dels anys. A més, s'analitza el comportament irregular observat en alguns països durant la fase de disminució del nombre d'infectats per grip. L'epidemiologia matemàtica utilitza els models matemàtics i computacionals els quals son un potent instrument per entendre i predir els comportaments de les malalties. En aquest projecte hem optimitzat i adaptat un model compartimental de tipus SEIR (Susceptibles, Exposats, Infectats, Recuperats) per assolir els nostres objectius. Els models epidemiològics optimitzats amb els paràmetres de transmissivitat comuns per a cada país s'han ajustat de manera correcta a les dades observades. Aquests models han estat capaços de reproduir fidelment la dinàmica de transmissió de la grip durant la fase de creixement, demostrant que els patrons de transmissió poden ser consistents dins d'un mateix país al llarg de diverses temporades. Posteriorment, el model s'ha modificat per representar de manera més precisa la fase de descens de la grip mitjançant la introducció de la injecció de susceptibles. Aquest enfocament consisteix a incorporar nous individus susceptibles d'infectar-se durant aquesta fase, cosa que permet capturar millor les dinàmiques observades en diverses temporades, on s'han produït repunts o irregularitats en la disminució dels casos. Aquesta aproximació empírica ha donat molt bons resultats en totes les temporades ajustades. L'ús de l'Algoritme Genètic de MATLAB per ajustar els paràmetres d'aquesta injecció de susceptibles ha resultat molt més eficaç que els les eines d'optimització de tipus local com ara fminsearch o fmincon ja que és capaç de trobar el mínim global de la funció optimitzada amb molta més facilitat i de manera més automàtica. S'han valorat els models en la seva totalitat, incloent les fases de creixement i descens, amb resultats satisfactoris i una precisió del 95%, indicant una alta fiabilitat en representar la transmissió de la grip. Com a tasca futura, s'inclouran més països i s'ajustaran els models amb paràmetres de transmissivitat comuns, així com una explicació més mecanicista basada en l'enfocament empíric de les injeccions de susceptibles.

This final degree project aims to analyze and model enterovirus infections in the pediatric population of Catalonia. Enteroviruses are viruses in the Picornaviridae family that can cause a variety of illnesses, from common colds to more serious conditions such as herpangina and foot-and-mouth disease. The main objective is to describe the behavior of epidemics, understand the seasonal dynamics of these viruses and develop a predictive mathematical model. For the investigation, an SEIR type epidemiological model (Susceptible, Exposed, Infected, Recovered) has been used. The data used to carry out the project come from the primary care services information system database (SISAP) and have been provided by Vall d'Hebron Hospital. They have been processed and categorized to facilitate comparison with model predictions. The adjustment of the model has been carried out using the least squares technique, ensuring a high precision in the predictions. The results show a clear seasonality in enterovirus infections, with peaks during autumn and spring. The adjusted SEIR model has proven to be effective in predicting outbreaks, with transmission, latency, and recovery constants that are consistent with the existing literature. This model provides a valuable tool for the management and prevention of enterovirus infections in the pediatric population. In conclusion, the work offers a detailed understanding of the spread of enteroviruses in Catalonia and proposes a useful predictive model for health authorities. This tool can significantly improve the management of future epidemics, contributing to better public health.

Aquest treball final de grau té com a objectiu analitzar i modelitzar les infeccions per enterovirus en la població pediàtrica de Catalunya. Els enterovirus són virus de la família Picornaviridae que poden causar diverses malalties, des de refredats comuns fins a afeccions més greus com l'herpangina i la febre aftosa. L'objectiu principal és descriure el comportament de les epidèmies, comprendre la dinàmica estacional d'aquests virus i desenvolupar un model matemàtic predictiu. Per a la investigació, s'ha utilitzat un model epidemiològic de tipus SEIR (Susceptibles, Exposats, Infectats, Recuperats). Les dades utilitzades per a la realització del projecte provenen de la base de dades del sistema d'informació dels serveis d'atenció primària (SISAP) i han estat proporcionades per l'Hospital Vall d'Hebron. S'han processat i categoritzat per facilitar la comparació amb les prediccions del model. L'ajust del model s'ha realitzat mitjançant la tècnica de mínims quadrats, assegurant una alta precisió en les prediccions. Els resultats mostren una estacionalitat clara en les infeccions per enterovirus, amb pics durant la tardor i la primavera. El model SEIR ajustat ha demostrat ser eficaç en la predicció dels brots, amb constants de transmissió, latència i recuperació que concorden amb la literatura existent. Aquest model proporciona una eina valuosa per a la gestió i prevenció de les infeccions per enterovirus en la població pediàtrica. En conclusió, el treball ofereix una comprensió detallada de la propagació dels enterovirus a Catalunya i proposa un model predictiu útil per a les autoritats sanitàries. Aquesta eina pot millorar significativament la gestió de futures epidèmies, contribuint a una millor salut pública.

De novo protein design has reached a new height in recent years thanks to new computational procedures, such as AlphaFold2, an artificial intelligence (AI) that predicts the three-dimensional structure of proteins from an amino acid sequence. This method allows for the design of proteins with high structural precision and complexity, capable of performing functions of medical and biotechnological relevance. This work aims to explore how the latest artificial intelligence methods, specifically AlphaFold2, can improve the prediction of protein tertiary structures and determine which proteins are more likely to successfully bind to therapeutic targets of interest, such as the RBD domain of SARS-CoV-2. Additionally, it aims to optimize current computational methodologies. Specifically, the prediction of structures of protein-protein complexes and ligand complexes competing for the same receptor has been carried out, analyzing various parameters regarding the quality of the prediction and the physicochemical properties of the proteins. This approach aims to optimize the computational methodology and develop a ranking of the affinities of proteins that could bind to the RBD receptor. The proteins studied have been designed both by other laboratories in previously published studies and by the Protein Design and Modeling group at the Institute of Molecular Biology of Barcelona (IBMB), for which experimental data are available. This provides an ideal framework for working on the optimization of computational methodologies.

El disseny computacional de proteïnes de novo ha experimentat un creixement en els últims anys gracies a nous procediments computacionals, com AlphaFold2, una intel·ligència artificial (IA) que prediu l'estructura tridimensional de proteïnes a partir d'una seqüencia d'aminoàcids. Aquest mètode permet el disseny de proteïnes amb alta precisió estructural i complexitat, capaces de desenvolupar funcions de rellevància mèdica i biotecnològica. Aquest treball té com a objectiu explorar com els mètodes més recents d'intel·ligència artificial, concretament AlphaFold2, poden millorar la predicció de l'estructura terciària de proteïnes i determinar quines tenen més probabilitat d'unir-se exitosament a dianes terapèutiques d'interès, com el domini RBD de SARS-CoV-2. A més, es pretén optimitzar les metodologies computacionals actuals. Específicament, s'ha realitzat la predicció d'estructures de complexos proteïna-proteïna i de complexos de lligands competint pel mateix receptor, analitzant diversos paràmetres sobre la qualitat de la predicció i propietats fisicoquímiques de les proteïnes. Aquest enfocament busca optimitzar la metodologia computacional i desenvolupar un rànquing d'afinitat de les proteïnes que podrien unir-se al receptor RBD. Les proteïnes estudiantes han estat dissenyades tant per altres laboratoris en estudis prèviament publicats com pel grup Protein Design and Modeling de l'Institut de Biologia Molecular de Barcelona (IBMB), per a les quals hi ha dades experimentals disponibles. Això proporciona un marc ideal per treballar en l'optimització de les metodologies computacionals.

The respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) causes 70% of bronchiolitis cases and thousands of annual deaths, particularly in the paediatric population under six months, placing a significant burden on the public health system. In October 2023, the monoclonal antibody nirsevimab was implemented for the first time in Catalonia in infants to combat the most severe clinical episodes caused by this virus. The primary objective of this study is to evaluate the impact of the first immunisation campaign with nirsevimab on the epidemiology and clinical outcomes of RSV. To this end, pre-pandemic patterns by age group have been characterized and compared with the current season, in addition to analysing the clinical outcomes of a prospective cohort of infants, observing differences between those who received nirsevimab and those who did not. The methodology followed in this study is divided into two major analyses: an epidemiological study and a patient-level study. The epidemiological analysis involves exploring the dynamics of bronchiolitis as an indirect measure of RSV and of the virus itself, conducting comparative analyses using an average pre-pandemic season and differentiating between various age groups. The patient-level analysis consists of a prospective study of clinical variables comparing a cohort that received nirsevimab with another cohort that did not. The results indicate that the pre-pandemic incidence of bronchiolitis followed a very robust pattern each season, which was significantly affected by the pandemic. It has been observed that the introduction of nirsevimab has reduced the incidence of RSV in infants under one year. Additionally, the prospective study determined that infants receiving nirsevimab are less likely to test positive for RSV and develop lower respiratory tract infections compared to those who were not immunised. In conclusion, this study demonstrates that the administration of nirsevimab in Catalonia has reduced the incidence of RSV and lower respiratory infections among infants, suggesting a protective effect against the virus. These results can modestly guide future immunisation campaigns against RSV and encourage further studies in this direction.

El virus respiratori sincicial (VRS) causa el 70% de les bronquiolitis i milers de morts anuals, particularment en la població pediàtrica menor de sis mesos, generant una càrrega significativa en el sistema públic sanitari. L'octubre de 2023 es va implementar per primera vegada a Catalunya l'anticòs monoclonal nirsevimab en lactants, per combatre els episodis clínics més greus causats per aquest virus. L'objectiu principal d'aquest estudi és avaluar l'impacte de la primera campanya d'immunització amb nirsevimab en l'epidemiologia i els resultats clínics del VRS. Per a això, s'han caracteritzat els patrons prepandèmics per franja d'edat i s'han comparat amb la temporada actual, a més d'analitzar els resultats clínics d'una cohort prospectiva de lactants, observant les diferències entre aquells que han rebut nirsevimab i els que no. La metodologia seguida en aquest estudi es divideix en dues grans anàlisis: un estudi epidemiològic i un estudi a escala pacient. L'anàlisi epidemiològica consisteix a explorar les dinàmiques de bronquiolitis com a mesura indirecta del VRS, i del mateix virus, fent anàlisis comparatives emprant una temporada mitjana prepandèmica i diferenciant entre diferents grups d'edat. L'anàlisi a escala pacient consisteix en un estudi prospectiu de variables clíniques que compara una cohort a la qual se li ha administrat nirsevimab amb una altra cohort a la qual no. Els resultats obtinguts indiquen que la incidència de bronquiolitis prepandèmica seguia un patró molt robust cada temporada, el qual es va veure afectat significativament per la pandèmia. S'ha observat que la introducció del nirsevimab ha reduït la incidència de VRS en els lactants menors d'un any. A més, l'estudi prospectiu ha determinat que els lactants que reben nirsevimab tenen menys probabilitat de donar positiu en VRS i de desenvolupar infeccions respiratòries de les vies baixes en comparació amb aquells que no han estat immunitzats. En conclusió, aquest estudi demostra que l'administració de nirsevimab a Catalunya ha reduït la incidència de VRS i d'infeccions de les vies baixes entre els petits, suggerint un efecte protector davant el virus. Aquests resultats poden ser guies modestes per plantejar les futures campanyes d'immunització contra el VRS i fomenten la realització de futurs estudis en aquesta línia.

The proposal for the reurbanization of the streets of Barcelona aims to improve the urban environment sustainably, creating a green corridor that connects urban areas with natural spaces such as the Collserola Natural Park. This initiative not only promotes biodiversity and air quality but also addresses vulnerability to heatwaves, prioritizing resilience to climate change. Additionally, sustainable drainage measures are incorporated to manage rainwater, which helps prevent reduce the surface runoff of contaminated water. By integrating natural elements and considering universal accessibility, sustainable urban design fosters social cohesion and well-being, strengthening the relationship between the city and nature.

La proposta de reurbanització dels carrers de Barcelona busca millorar l'entorn urbà de manera sostenible, creant un corredor verd que connecta àrees urbanes amb espais naturals com el Parc Natural de Collserola. Aquesta iniciativa no només promou la biodiversitat i la qualitat de l'aire, sinó que també aborda la vulnerabilitat a les ones de calor, prioritzant la resiliència davant el canvi climàtic. A més, s'incorporen mesures de drenatge sostenible per gestionar l'aigua de pluja, la qual cosa ajuda reduir l'escorrentia superficial d'aigua contaminada. Integrant elements naturals i considerant l'accessibilitat universal, el disseny urbà sostenible fomenta la cohesió social i el benestar, reforçant la relació entre la ciutat i la natura.

The largest reserve of biologically active carbon in terrestrial ecosystems is found in the top two meters of soil. Nowadays, climate change is intensifying, making it crucial for public spaces to be both functional within biological systems and useful for citizen use. Soil organic carbon is crucial for ecosystem functioning, playing a key role in regulating climate, water supply, and biodiversity. All these factors provide essential and necessary services for human well-being. Temperature increases related to climate change lead to a rise in the activity of microorganisms that decompose organic matter and release the carbon contained in the soil. This increases the atmospheric CO2 concentration. Vegetation acts as a captor, removing tons of carbon from the atmosphere daily through photosynthetic processes. Additionally, woody vegetation also serves as an important natural storage for carbon dioxide. The distribution and type of species in both surface and elevation play a fundamental role in the functions and effectiveness of this process. The work has focused on detecting interferences in the carbon cycle within the urban environment related to soils, vegetation, paving, buildings, etc. An analysis of the exchange of matter and energy between the urban settlement and its natural surroundings or geographical context was incorporated.Detailed research was also conducted with local residents and the existing public space, along with listening to their urban needs. Characteristics of the target spaces defined in the work where techniques for CO2 capture and retention can be applied have been investigated and detected, as well as new potential spaces. La major reserva de carboni biològicament actiu dels ecosistemes terrestres es troba en els dos primers metres de sòl. Avui en día el canvi climàtic s'està intensificant, per la qual cosa els espais públics se'ls hi están donant com a valor principal tant el de ser funcionals en els sistemes biològics com el de ser útils per a l'ús del ciutadà. El carboni orgànic del sòl és crucial per al funcionament de l'ecosistema, exercint un paper clau en la regulació del clima, el subministrament d'aigua i la biodiversitat. Tot això proporciona serveis essencials i necessaris per al benestar humà. Els augments de les temperatures relacionats amb el canvi climàtic generen un augment en l'activitat dels microorganismes que descomponen la matèria orgànica i alliberen el carboni contingut en el sòl. Això augmenta la concentració de CO2 atmosfèric. La vegetació, com a element captador, cada día retira tones de l'atmosfera a través dels processos fotosintètics.Addicionalment la vegetació llenyosa també constitueix un important emmagatzematge natural de diòxid de carboni. La distribució i els tipus d'espècies en superfície i alçat tenen un paper fonamental en les funcions i efectivitat d'aquest procés. El treball s'ha basat en detectar interferències en el cicle de carboni dins de l'entorn urbà, relacionats amb sòls, vegetació, pavimentació, edificació etc. S'ha incorporat l'anàlisi d'intercanvi de matèria i energia entre l'assentament urbà i el seu entorn natural o context geogràfic. També s'ha fet una investigació detallada dels veïns de la zona i la seva percepció de l'espai públic existent i ademés s'ha escoltat les necessitats a nivell urbà. S'ha investigat i s'ha detectat les característiques dels espais objectiu que es defineixen en el treball. On es puguin aplicar tècniques per la captació i retenció de CO2, així com a nous espais potencials. This Final Degree Project presents MyDataHeart project, developed at the Hospital de Sant Pau in Barcelona. The project focuses on data mapping from a telemedicine platform (mHeart) and the analysis of data for clinical research. mHeart is a platform used in clinical practice in Cardiology consultations for the follow-up of heart transplant patients, and it records a large amount of information from all interactions between the patient and their medical team. The main objective is to, through the download of native data from this platform, structure the data to enable the development of clinical research and, consequently, improve the quality of care. The MyDataHeart project addresses the connection of the information included in the mHeart application's database, the automatic download of various tables that include relevant clinical variables, and their subsequent structuring, facilitating the execution of statistical analyses as a starting point for addressing clinical research questions. The project highlights that the use of digital health solutions, such as mHeart, can significantly improve patient monitoring and follow-up, and therefore, enhance their health. However, it is essential to consider that the potential use of the vast amount of data generated by these solutions for clinical research must necessarily involve an efficient and automatic data transfer. These platforms, and specifically mHeart, are not initially designed for this purpose, so resources must be dedicated to structuring all this information, ensuring its quality and transparency from the source of collection to the structured data for analysis. This process of structured mapping and transfer should facilitate collaborative work between physicians and researchers (particularly with biostatisticians). The subsequent analysis and generation of studies or reports that can be conducted with the automatically structured data should feedback and improve the quality of care.

Aquest Treball de Final de Grau presenta el projecte MyDataHeart, desenvolupat a l'Hospital de Sant Pau de Barcelona. El projecte se centra en el mapeig de dades d'una plataforma de telemedicina (mHeart) i l'anàlisi de les dades per a la recerca clínica. mHeart és una plataforma utilitzada en pràctica clínica a les consultes de Cardiologia pel seguiment de pacients trasplantats de cor, i aquesta registra una gran quantitat d'informació de totes les interaccions que té el pacient i el seu equip mèdic. L'objectiu principal és a través de la descàrrega de dades natives d'aquesta plataforma, estructurar les dades que possibilitin desenvolupar recerca clínica i, com a conseqüència, millorar la qualitat assistencial. El projecte MyDataHeart aborda la connexió de la informació inclosa en la base de dades de l'aplicació mHeart, la descàrrega automàtica de diverses taules que inclouen variables clíniques rellevants i la seva estructuració subseqüent, de manera que es faciliti realitzar explotacions estadístiques, com a punt de partida per respondre a preguntes de recerca clínica. El treball destaca que l'ús de solucions de salut digital, com mHeart, pot millorar significativament el control i seguiment dels pacients, i per tant la millora de la seva salut. No obstant això, és essencial considerar que l'ús potencial de la gran quantitat de dades generades per aquesta mena de solucions per fer recerca clínica ha de passar necessàriament per un eficient i automàtic traspàs de dades. Aquestes plataformes, i en concret mHeart, no estan inicialment dissenyades per aquest propòsit, per la qual cosa cal dedicar recursos per estructurar tota aquesta informació, garantint-ne la qualitat i la transparència des de la font de recollida fins a les dades estructurades per analitzar. Aquest procés de mapeig i traspàs estructurat ha de permetre un treball col·laboratiu entre metges i investigadors (i en particular amb bioestadístics). La posterior anàlisi i generació d'estudis o informes que es puguin realitzar amb les dades estructurades automàticament ha de retroalimentar i millorar la qualitat assistencial.

The HACCP system stands out as the most efficient methodology to prevent food contamination in food production environments. It is based on risk assessment and the implementation of corresponding control measures. It is crucial to assess the risk of contamination to identify critical control points (CCPs). Given the importance of the food industry in feeding at-risk groups, it is essential that the process is not only optimal but also safe. Therefore, analyzing the suitability of the HACCP system for this sector is one of the objectives of this work. Despite the proper implementation of the HACCP system, it is essential that food handlers strictly follow Good Hygiene Practices. Thus, another objective of this study is to evaluate the influence of non-compliance with these Good Practices on food safety. During the research, it was found that the likelihood of properly following handwashing practices is considerably high. However, the likelihood of recording daily and each time a task is completed was very low. Similarly, the likelihood of properly controlling the order of cleaning utensils used with allergenic products and the proper handling of chemicals was also quite low. Additionally, it was observed that workers are proactive in adopting good practices because they are interested, but due to the large amount of work and the realistic day-to-day resources, it is difficult for them to maintain one hundred percent adherence to good practices.

El sistema APPCC es destaca com la metodologia més eficient per a prevenir la contaminació alimentària en entorns de producció alimentària. Es fonamenta en l'avaluació dels riscos i la implementació de mesures de control corresponents. És crucial estimar el risc de contaminació per a identificar els punts crítics de control (PCC). Donada la rellevància de la indústria alimentària en l'alimentació de grups de risc, és essencial que el procés no sols sigui òptim, sinó també segur. Per tant, analitzar l'adequació del sistema APPCC a aquest sector és un dels objectius d'aquest treball. Malgrat la correcta implementació del sistema APPCC, és fonamental que els manipuladors d'aliments segueixin estrictament les Bones Pràctiques d'Higiene. Per això, un altre objectiu d'aquest estudi és avaluar la influència de l'incompliment d'aquestes Bones Pràctiques en la seguretat alimentària. Durant la recerca, es va trobar que la probabilitat de seguir adequadament les pràctiques de rentada de mans és considerablement alta. No obstant això, la probabilitat de registrar diàriament i cada cop que es finalitza una tasca, va ser molt baixa. Així mateix, la probabilitat de controlar adequadament l'ordre de la neteja dels utensilis que s'han usat amb producte al·lergènic i la bona manipulació dels productes químics, també va ser bastant baixa. A més, es va observar que els treballadors són proactius en adoptar unes bones pràctiques, ja que n'estan interessats, però a causa de la gran quantitat de feina i els recursos realistes del dia a dia, se'ls fa difícil continuar amb el cent per cent de les bones pràctiques.

Although the use of insects in food is not new in many cultures such as Asian or Central American cultures, it is new in Europe. Taking this into account, European legislation, for the moment, only allows a certain number of insects for human consumption: larvae of Tenebrio molitor (mealworms), locusta migratoria (migratory grasshopper), acheta domesticus (house cricket) and the larvae of Alphitobius diaperinus (garbage beetle). In general, the use of insect meal will provide us with proteins, essential amino acids, minerals and vitamins to the product, in addition to contributing to the sustainability of the planet, since its breeding has a low environmental impact, which encompasses sun, water, energy and CO¿ footprint). The main objective of this work was to evaluate the effects caused by the addition of various doses (3%, 5% and 7%) of insect meal (from Acheta domesticus) together with hydrocolloids such as agar (0.25 and 5%) and alginate (0.5 and 1%). And to assess the effects they had on the rheological properties (viscosity, thixotropy, viscoelasticity) of the mashed potato. The results indicate that the addition of insect meal to the mashed potato improved the nutritional composition and rheological characteristics. In addition to causing a loss of brightness and darkening of the mixture. According to the results obtained, it was found that the viscosity and thixotropy of the mixtures increased because the hydrocolloids and the insect flour may have contributed to the swelling of the starch granules, facilitating the access of water to their interior. The combination of adding alginate and flour did not result in such a significant change on the samples as did agar, which improved the rheological performance. Therefore, it can be concluded that the combination of added insect meal and agar (at the concentrations used) is the most efficient in improving the rheological characteristics of the puree. Furthermore, the more insect meal added to the sample, the lower the consumer acceptance.

Aunque el uso de insectos en alimentación no es una cosa nueva en muchas culturas como por ejemplos las asiáticas o centro americanas, sí que lo es en Europa. Teniendo en cuenta esto, la legislación europea, de momento, solo permite un número determinado de insectos para el consumo humano: larvas de Tenebrio molitor (gusanos de la harina), locusta migratoria (saltamontes migratorio), acheta domesticus (grillo doméstico) y las larvas de Alphitobius de diaperinus (escarabajo de la basura). En general, el uso de harina de insecto nos aportará al producto proteínas, aminoácidos esenciales, minerales y vitaminas, además de contribuir a la sostenibilidad del planeta, puesto que su cría tiene un bajo impacto ambiental, que engloba el sol, agua, energía y huella de CO2) El objetivo principal de este trabajo fue evaluar los efectos provocados por la adición de varias dosis(3%,5% y 7%) de harina de insecto (de Acheta domesticus) juntamente con hidrocoloides como el agar (0,25 y 5%) y el alginato (0,5 y 1%). Y valorar los efectos que causaban a las propiedades reológicas (viscosidad, tixotropía, viscoelasticidad) del puré de patata. Los resultados indican que la adición de harina de insecto al puré de patata mejoraba la composición nutricional y las características reológicas. Además de ocasionar una pérdida de brillantez y oscurecimiento de la mezcla. De acuerdo con los resultados obtenidos se ha visto que ha aumentado la viscosidad y tixotropía de las mezclas debido a que los hidrocoloides y la harina de insecto pueden haber contribuido al inflamiento de los gránulos de almidón, facilitando el acceso del agua a su interior. La combinación de añadir alginato y harina no ha originado un cambio tan significativo sobre las muestras tal como sí lo ha hecho el agar, el cual ha mejorado las prestaciones reológicas. Por lo tanto, se puede concluir que la combinación de harina de insecto y agar añadidos (en las concentraciones empleadas) es la más eficiente para mejorar las características reológicas del puré. Además, que cuando más harina de insecto adicionamos a la muestra disminuirá la aceptación por parte del consumidor.

Streptococcus pyogenes, also known as Group A ß-hemolytic streptococcus (EGA), is a bacterium that affects the skin and the oropharynx. It is transmitted through droplets and direct contact, mainly affecting children and can cause mild infections such as Scarlet Fever or some invasive ones like necrotizing fasciitis. Although its sensitivity to penicillin is known, an increase in invasive infections has been observed in recent years, especially after the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic. This is where the need to understand the new epidemiological dynamics that it presents arises to be able to anticipate potential epidemics of invasive infections and the correction of the current increasing transmission dynamics. In this project, carried out with the research group BIOCOM-SC at UPC and in collaboration with the research group Infecció i Immunitat al pacient pediàtric from Vall d'Hebron, the aim is to understand the epidemiological dynamics of Scarlet Fever both in the long and short term. This is to determine the changes that have occurred in these dynamics due to the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic. To answer the questions suggested at the beginning of the project, it has been processed and analysed the daily data from the Vigilància sindròmica d'infeccions a Atenció Primària provided by the Sistema d'Informació per a la Vigilància d'Infeccions a Catalunya (SIVIC). Based on the obtained data, a set of graphs has been generated to examine the epidemiological dynamics in annual, quarterly, and weekly periods, with the aim of identifying possible patterns both in the long and short term. The obtained results indicate that the transmissibility of Scarlet Fever is related to school periods, during which there is an increase in diagnoses of this infection. From the results, it has also been confirmed that there has been an increase in diagnoses from 2022 compared to the period of time when we started having data, 2011, until 2019 where the COVID-19 pandemic started. Finally, it has been observed that the number of diagnoses is not independent of the day of the week, with a higher number of diagnoses at the beginning of the week and a lower number during the weekend.

El Streptococcus pyogenes, també conegut com a estreptococ ß-hemolític del grup A (EGA), és un bacteri que afecta la pell i l'orofaringe. És transmès per gotes i contacte directe afectant principalment a infants i pot causar infeccions lleus com escarlatina o algunes invasives com la fasciïtis necrosant. Tot i que es coneix la seva sensibilitat a la penicil·lina s'ha observat un increment en les infeccions invasives en els últims anys, especialment després de la pandèmia de la SARS-CoV-2. És d'aquí que sorgeix la necessitat de conèixer les noves dinàmiques epidemiològiques que presenta i així poder anticipar possibles epidèmies d'infeccions invasives i poder corregir la dinàmica d'augment de la transmissivitat actual. En aquest projecte, realitzat amb el grup de recerca de la UPC BIOCOM-SC i amb la col·laboració del grup de recerca Infecció i Immunitat al pacient pediàtric de la Vall d'Hebron, es vol comprendre la dinàmica epidemiològica de l'escarlatina tant a llarg termini com a curt termini per determinar quins han estat els canvis que s'han produït en aquesta dinàmica per la pandèmia del SARS-CoV-2. Per a respondre les preguntes plantejades a l'inici del projecte s'han tractat i analitzat les dades diàries de Vigilància sindròmica d'infeccions a Atenció Primària proporcionades pel Sistema d'Informació per a la Vigilància d'Infeccions a Catalunya (SIVIC). A partir d'aquesta informació, s'ha generat un conjunt de gràfics amb la finalitat d'examinar la dinàmica epidemiològica en períodes anuals, trimestrals i setmanals, amb l'objectiu d'identificar possibles patrons a llarg i curt termini. Els resultats obtinguts indiquen que la transmissivitat de l'escarlatina està lligada als períodes lectius que és quan es produeix un augment de diagnòstics d'aquesta infecció. A partir dels resultats també s'ha pogut confirmar que hi ha hagut un augment dels diagnòstics des de l'any 2022 en comparació amb el període des d'on es comencen a tenir dades, any 2011, fins al 2019 on comença la pandèmia del COVID-19. Finalment, s'ha observat que el nombre de diagnòstics no és aliè a dia de la setmana obtenint un major nombre de diagnòstics al inici de la setmana i un menor durant el cap de setmana.

La epidemiología matemática es una disciplina que utiliza las matemáticas para comprender y predecir la dinámica de las epidemias, ayudando en la toma de decisiones de la salud pública. Este trabajo se centra en el uso del modelo de Gompertz para analizar la epidemia de viruela del mono (Monkeypox) y evaluar su eficiencia en la modelización de esta enfermedad. Se trata de una enfermedad zoonótica (que se puede transmitir entre animales y seres humanos) causada por el virus de la viruela del mono, o Monkeypox virus (MPXV) en inglés, que también afecta a los humanos. Se considera una enfermedad menos grave que la viruela, pero todavía puede ser peligrosa. Su propagación se extendió a escala mundial, hasta el punto de que el 23 de julio de 2022, la OMS declaró la viruela del mono como pandemia. Hemos utilizado una serie de herramientas estadísticas e informáticas, con la ayuda del lenguaje de programación MATLAB, para evaluar el modelo de Gompertz en la modelización de la dinámica epidemiológica de la viruela del mono y proporcionar un análisis detallado de esta dinámica, obteniendo gráficas que ilustran el ajuste del modelo de Gompertz en los datos epidemiológicos. Destacamos una alta concordancia entre el modelo y los datos, indicando un ajuste satisfactorio. En definitiva, las modificaciones realizadas en el código y las mejoras en el procesamiento de datos han permitido adaptar el modelo de Gompertz de forma efectiva a los datos epidemiológicos de la viruela del mono. Así, hemos encontrado que las características demográficas del país afectado parecen tener menor efecto en la dinámica del Monkeypox que el número de brotes en cada país. La monitorización y análisis de la epidemia de Monkeypox es esencial para entender la epidemiología del virus y poder realizar predicciones de uso a salud pública.

Mathematical epidemiology is a discipline that uses mathematics to understand and predict the dynamics of epidemics, aiding public health decision-making. This paper focuses on the use of the Gompertz model to analyse the monkeypox epidemic and evaluate its efficiency in modelling this disease. Monkeypox is a zoonotic disease (a disease that can be transmitted between animals and humans) caused by the Monkeypox virus (MPXV), which also affects humans. It is considered a less serious disease than smallpox but can still be dangerous. It has spread globally, to the point that on 23 July 2022, the WHO declared monkeypox a pandemic. We have used statistical and computational tools, with the help of the MATLAB programming language, to evaluate the Gompertz model in modelling the epidemiological dynamics of monkeypox and provide a detailed analysis of these dynamics, obtaining plots that illustrate the fit of the Gompertz model on epidemiological data. We highlight a high agreement between the model and the data, indicating a satisfactory fit. Ultimately, modifications to the code and improvements in data processing have allowed us to adapt the Gompertz model effectively to monkeypox epidemiological data. Thus, we have found that the demographics of the affected country appear to have less effect on the dynamics of Monkeypox than the number of outbreaks in each country. Monitoring and analysis of the Monkeypox epidemic is essential to understand the epidemiology of the virus and to make predictions for public health use.

Aquest treball es centra en la reconstrucció de l'arbre filogenètic a nivell de gènere de les asteràcies als Països Catalans. Un dels primers objectius, ha sigut completar la llista de gèneres, pel que ha calgut dur a terme un estudi exhaustiu de la sinonímia dels gèneres, tenint en compte la nomenclatura de les diferents obres i bases de dades de referència. Les mostres dels gèneresinclosos a la llista han sigut tractades per obtenir dades de seqüenciació útils utilitzant el kit Angiosperms353. L'anàlisi filogenètica d'aquestes dades genètiques, que constitueix el resultat d'aquest estudi, ha permès explorar les relacions evolutives entre els gèneres d'asteràcies en aquesta regió geogràfica específica. Aquest enfocament molecular proporciona una visió més clara de la diversitat genètica i l'evolució d'aquestes plantes als Països Catalans. Els resultats d'aquest estudi contribueixen a la comprensió de la biodiversitat i de la història evolutiva de les asteràcies en aquesta àrea geogràfica, amb l'objectiu de disposar d'un marc filogenètic adequat que permeti analitzar altres tipus de dades (etnobotàniques i citogenètiques, entre d'altres).

Este trabajo se centra en la reconstrucción del árbol filogenético a nivel de género de las asteráceas en los Países Catalanes. Uno de los primeros objetivos, ha sido completar la lista de géneros, por lo que ha sido necesario llevar a cabo un estudio exhaustivo de la sinonimia de los géneros, teniendo en cuenta la nomenclatura de las distintas obras y bases de datos de referencia. Las muestras de los géneros incluidos en la lista han sido tratadas para obtener datos de secuenciación útiles utilizando el kit Angiosperms353. El análisis filogenético de estos datos genéticos, que constituye el resultado de este estudio, ha permitido explorar las relaciones evolutivas entre los géneros de asteráceas en esta región geográfica específica. Este enfoque molecular proporciona una visión más clara de la diversidad genética y la evolución de estas plantas en los Países Catalanes. Los resultados de este estudio contribuyen a la comprensión de la biodiversidad y de la historia evolutiva de las asteráceas en esta área geográfica, con el objetivo de disponer de un marco filogenético adecuado que permita analizar otros tipos de datos (etnobotánicos y citogenéticos, entre otros).

This TFG addresses the effect of beta-casein genetic polymorphism on the proteolysis and texture of mature cheeses. To achieve this, we worked with cheeses made with conventional milk (consisting of a mixture of beta-casein A1 and A2) and cheeses made with beta-casein A2 milk. The work consists of two phases. In the first phase, a comprehensive literature search is carried out to establish the context, and a hands-on cheese production class is taken to understand the factors that influence proteolysis and its sensory characteristics. The second phase involves the study of proteolysis in ripened cheese samples and the analysis of their texture. Experiments are carried out to obtain soluble nitrogen extracts and to determine their total free amino acids. In addition, texture data is analyzed using uniaxial compression testing and texture profile analysis (TPA). The main conclusions indicate that there is a significant difference in amino acid levels between A2 cheeses and control cheeses at 60 days of ripening, with greater proteolysis in the former. The instrumental results reveal that, in general, the Control and A2 cheese samples have similarities in elasticity, deformability and chewiness. A significant decrease in cheese cohesion with ripening time was also observed for both samples, possibly due to increased proteolysis. However, no noticeable differences in cohesiveness were detected between the Control and A2 samples. The relationship of the hardness and brittleness tests with the sensory tests revealed that the perception of these in A2 cheese could be linked to its stickiness and chewing difficulty, possibly related to the interactions between proteins and water in the final product, despite the possible hydrolysis of the matrix. In addition, the increase in proteolysis detected in the cheeses made with A2 milk is identified as an economic opportunity, as it is possible to obtain mature cheeses in less time. This could reduce production costs.

Aquest TFG aborda l'efecte del polimorfisme genètic de la beta-caseïna en la proteòlisi i textura de formatges madurs. Per aconseguir-ho, s'ha treballat amb formatges elaborats amb llet convencional (formada per una barreja de beta-caseïna A1 i A2) i formatges elaborats amb llet beta-caseïna A2.El treball consta de dues fases. A la primera fase, es realitza una recerca bibliogràfica exhaustiva per establir el context, i es participa en una classe pràctica de producció de formatge per comprendre els factors que influeixen en la proteòlisi i les seves característiques sensorials. La segona fase implica l'estudi de la proteòlisi en mostres de formatge madurat i l'anàlisi de la seva textura. Es realitzen experiments per obtenir extractes de nitrogen soluble i determinar-ne els aminoàcids lliures totals. A més, s'analitzen les dades de textura utilitzant la prova de compressió uniaxial i anàlisi de perfil de textura (TPA). Les principals conclusions indiquen que hi ha una significativa diferència en els nivells d'aminoàcids entre els formatges A2 i els formatges control als 60 dies de maduració, amb una major proteòlisi en els primers. Els resultats instrumentals revelen que, en general, les mostres de formatge Control i A2 presenten similituds en elasticitat, deformabilitat i masticabilitat. També es va observar una disminució significativa de la cohesió del formatge amb el temps de maduració per a totes dues mostres, possiblement a causa d'una major proteòlisi. No obstant això, no es van detectar diferències notables en la cohesivitat entre les mostres Control i A2. La relació de les proves de duresa i la fragilitat amb les proves sensorials van revelar que la percepció d'aquestes en formatge A2 podria estar vinculada a la seva adhesivitat i dificultat de mastegar, possiblement relacionades amb les interaccions entre les proteïnes i l'aigua en el producte final, malgrat la possible hidròlisi de la matriu. A més, l'increment de proteòlisi detectada en els formatges elaborats amb llet A2, s'identifica com una oportunitat econòmica, al poder obtenir formatges madurs amb menor temps. Això podria reduir costos de producció

With the growing urgency to address climate change, it is crucial to understand how to adapt our urban environments to meet current and future climate challenges. This study aims to examine in detail the climate impacts in Barcelona, analyze the climate adaptation of public spaces, and propose landscape improvements to promote urban resilience. Based on the study of the current and future climate of the city, the analysis of the risks associated with climate change, and the study of the climate adaptation of urban public spaces, public spaces with high use and climate risk are identified. Taking Bogatell seafront promenade, Av. Mistral and Pl. Urquinaona as examples, their climate vulnerability is analyzed and evaluated and specific landscape design solutions are provided to improve the climate adaptability of these spaces. This study provides a comprehensive overview of the challenges and opportunities of Barcelona in relation to climate change. It attempts to contribute to the development of landscape design strategies that promote urban adaptation and resilience, and to provide a reference for other cities facing similar challenges.

Amb la urgència creixent d'abordar el canvi climàtic, és essencial comprendre com adaptar els nostres entorns urbans per enfrontar els desafiaments climàtics actuals i futurs. Aquest estudi té com a objectiu examinar detalladament els impactes climàtics a Barcelona, analitzar l'adaptabilitat climàtica dels espais públics i proposar millores paisatgístiques per promoure la resiliència urbana. A partir de l'estudi del clima actual i del futur de la ciutat, de l'anàlisi dels riscos associats al canvi climàtic i de l'estudi de l'adaptació climàtica dels espais públics urbans, s'aconsegueix identificar els espais públics d'alt ús i amb risc climàtic. Prenent el Pg. Marítim del Bogatell, Av. Mistral i Pl. Urquinaona com a exemples, se n'analitza i avalua la vulnerabilitat climàtica i s'aporten solucions específiques de disseny paisatgístic per millorar l'adaptabilitat climàtica d'aquests espais. Aquest estudi proporciona una visió integral dels desafiaments i les oportunitats en relació amb el canvi climàtic a Barcelona. Busca contribuir al desenvolupament d'estratègies de disseny de paisatge que fomentin l'adaptació i la resiliència urbana, i és un referent per a altres ciutats amb desafiaments similars.

The aim of this work is the study of the bioavailability of glycine (Gly)-iron (Fe) chelates to determine which combination of Gly:Fe and pH is more bioavailable to the human organism, as well as to establish whether Gly chelates are more bioavailable in water than ferrous sulphate, the most widely used inorganic salt in iron supplementation. For this purpose, 21 samples of chelates with different Gly:Fe ratios were analysed at three different pHs: acid pH (0.9), initial pH (4) and isoelectric point pH (6). For the bioavailability study, an in vitro system was used to simulate human digestion consisting of a two-step sample digestion process: peptic digestion and continuous flow dialysis. Continuous flow dialysis required the preparation of a NaHCO3 solution with a specific concentration for each sample, which was determined by an acidity titration of the sample after peptic digestion. The peptic digestion and dialysis procedure was performed in triplicate for each sample, obtaining a total of 63 replicates. For the determination of iron bioavailability, the iron in the sample was quantified before and after undergoing the dialysis process to evaluate the percentage of iron that had been absorbed. The results determined that the most optimal combination of pH and Gly:Fe ratio, i.e., the one with the highest bioavailability in water, is the 1:1 ratio at pH 6, pH at which glycine is at its isoelectric point. On the other hand, a comparison was also carried out between the bioavailability of iron sulphate and that of the chelates studied, concluding that, in water, ferrous sulphate has a higher bioavailability than Gly chelates. El objetivo de este trabajo ha sido el estudio de la biodisponibilidad de los quelatos de glicina (Gly)-hierro (Fe) para determinar qué combinación de Gly:Fe y pH resulta más biodisponible para el organismo humano, así como establecer si los quelatos de Gly presentan una mayor biodisponibilidad en agua que el sulfato ferroso, la sal inorgánica más ampliamente utilizada en la suplementación de hierro. Para ello se analizaron 21 muestras de quelatos con distintas ratios de Gly:Fe a tres pH diferentes: pH ácido (0.9), pH inicial (4) y pH del punto isoeléctrico (6). Para el estudio de la biodisponibilidad se utilizó un sistema in vitro para simular la digestión humana que consistía en un proceso de digestión de la muestra en dos etapas: digestión péptica y diálisis de flujo continuo. La diálisis de flujo continuo requería la preparación de una solución de NaHCO3 con una concentración específica para cada muestra, que fue determinada mediante una valoración de acidez de la muestra después de la digestión péptica. El procedimiento de digestión péptica y diálisis se realizó por triplicado para cada muestra, obteniendo un total de 63 réplicas. Para la determinación de la biodisponibilidad del hierro se cuantificó el hierro de la muestra antes y después de pasar por el proceso de diálisis para evaluar el porcentaje de hierro que había sido absorbido. Los resultados han determinado que la combinación de pH y ratio Gly:Fe más óptima, es decir, la que presenta una mayor biodisponibilidad en agua, es la ratio 1:1 a pH 6, pH en el cual la glicina se encuentra en su punto isoeléctrico. Por otra parte, también se llevó a cabo una comparación entre la biodisponibilidad del sulfato de hierro y la de los quelatos estudiados, concluyendo que, en agua, el sulfato ferroso tiene una mayor biodisponibilidad que los quelatos de Gly.
